Insider's Guide to
NYC Gallery Openings

With hundreds of galleries based in New York City, it can be difficult to keep up with all of the art openings.

How to attend art openings in NYC: on Wednesdays you should check out the galleries on Manhattan's Lower East Side, on Thursdays everyone is in Chelsea or on 57th Street at Madison for the main show and on Fridays the art crowd goes to Brooklyn for their gallery openings. The openings in Williamsburg are usually on the second Friday of the month. 95% of the galleries serve wine or beer at their openings and most are held from 6 pm until 8 pm. Occasionally rogue galleries in all areas will have their openings on other evenings, especially Friday or Saturday nights and sometimes the hours are from 4 pm to 6 pm - so if a friend is having an art opening, double check the date and time!

Boo Ritson is best known for works which depict characters and still-lives drawn from her own imagination. She paints her subject in a thick, wet paint and then photographs them while wet. Ritson’s work emphasizes the sensuality of paint and our perceptions of it. Boo Ritson studied Fine Art at the University of Buckinghamshire, UK and the Royal College of Art receiving her MA in 2005.

Acclaimed poet, John Ashbery was fascinated in his youth by the collage novels of Max Ernst and the collaged Cubist paintings of Picasso and Braque. He started making collages as an undergraduate at Harvard and has continued this process in both his visual and literary creations ever since.

John Ashbery is considered by many to be the most important living poet writing in English. Ashbery has published more than twenty collections, most recently Planisphere.

SLEEPING
PODS
Could Sleeping Pods solve the housing problem
for "less picky" NYC creative types?

Many artist's studios in New York City are in buildings not zoned for "LIVE / WORK" situations, thus the artists are not allowed to sleep overnight in their studios. Artists usually have enough trouble paying for their studios, much less for a separate apartment just for sleeping.

"Pods"
A comfortable and practical sleeping compartment which combines privacy with security in shared living situations. The Pods can be stacked two high for an economy of space. They are simple to move, assemble and install; easy to clean and maintain; and very strong.

Open ventilation at each end means every pod has good air circulation along with a comfortable and roomy feeling interior. The doors are available in a solid, tinted or frosted finish and are lockable for safety. The "STOCK" model comes with a fitted vinyl covered foam mattress or a standard mattress and has the following features:
  • Digital radio and iPod dock
  • Alarm clock
  • Headphones
  • Coat hanger
  • Storage shelf
  • Storage rack
  • Mirror
Additional options:

• Secure luggage compartment
• TV with DVD
• Leather-covered mattress
• Power plug
• Hygienic pull-out roll of paper for the vinyl mattress.

Sleeping Pods are currently manufactured only in the UK with the standard pod costing $2,712 + tax (£1695 +VAT), though this reduces for multiples. A basic Pod shell costs $1,560 + tax (£975 +VAT). All additional options are priced individually. For more information contact "Podtime Versatile Sleep Pods": http://www.podtime.co.uk/the_pods.html

FOOD
Saxon + Parole

Now Open in
The Bowery! NYC

Let's assume you have just finished experiencing the latest exhibition at the New Museum and you want a fabulous dinner. In the middle of the Bowery, once one of the poorest areas of the city, Saxon + Parole has recently opened as a top shelf eatery.

Executive Chef Brad Farmerie, along with The AvoroKo Group, has created this warm and inviting 112 seat restaurant at 316 Bowery (at Bleecker Street). "Saxon + Parole" was named after two prize-winning racehorses. The interior pays homage to the many stables which once populated this part of Manhattan. The restaurant's menu focuses on meats, seafood and seasonal, sustainable produce and Chef Farmerie has put a global twist on his use of ingredients, seasonings and cooking methods. They also sell "Parole Whiskey", an American Rye Whiskey, formulated in 1873 and bottled in New York state.

Saxon + Parole is also a good dinner option before attending a play at the nearby "Off Off Broadway" theaters on Fourth Street.

Below is a suggested five course dinner at the restaurant. Approximate cost for this meal with drinks and champagne is $126 + tax and tip, per person.

STARTERS:
Enjoy a HOUSEMADE POT of either portabello mushroom mousse, Parole Whiskey and truffle jelly or the chicken liver mousse, port and pepper jelly pot, both served with toasted sourdough bread.

OR share the Razor Clam & Egg as an appetizer.

Shaved roasted beet salad with watercress, sweet spiced pecans and feta cheese

SOUP COURSE:
Carrot, ginger & lemon soup with a toasted "chili marshmallow".

MAIN COURSE:
